Help! A tick! - tips for dog owners

A tick is an arachnid and looks like a small, flat spider. It feeds on the blood of small rodents, birds, but also horses, sheep, and deer. A tick bite can cause infections or diseases. Did you know that in Germany, an average of 10–20% of ticks are infected with the Borrelia bacteria? 😱 This bacterium can lead to Lyme disease – and dogs can get it too. So, what should you do if you spot a tick in your best friend’s fur? REMOVE IT!! But how?

Within 24 Hours

Remove the tick as quickly as possible – ideally within 24 hours. The faster you remove it, the lower the risk of disease transmission.

Use a Special Tick Removal Tool

These are usually pointed tweezers that allow you to remove the tick more completely. You can also use a tick removal card or, if you have nothing else, a regular tweezer.
Place the tool as close to the skin as possible, just above the tick’s head. Do not squeeze the body! Pull it out slowly. Ideally, you’ll remove the entire tick. If a piece remains in the skin and you can't get it out, don’t panic – it will come out on its own, like a splinter.

Disinfect

Do not try to stun the tick with alcohol, iodine, soap, oil, or other substances! That only increases the risk of infection.
However, it's very important to disinfect the bite area afterward with 70% alcohol or iodine.

Keep an Eye on Your Dog

If your dog shows symptoms like fever, lethargy, pain, stiffness, loss of appetite, or a red ring around the bite, contact your vet and mention that your dog was bitten by a tick.

What Else Can You Do?

Tick, Flea & Lice Collar

Protect your furry friend with a flea & tick collar. This collar kills ticks, fleas, and lice immediately. It continuously releases a small dose of Imidacloprid and Flumethrin, which spreads over the skin and coat.
The dosage is so low that it is completely harmless for both humans and dogs.

Make sure your dog wears the collar year-round – ticks can become active at just 5 to 10 °C.

And combine the flea collar with our practical DogTools collar. This collar is not for attaching the leash but is specially designed to protect the flea collar from weather and wear – giving even better coverage.
The flea collar goes inside and sits snugly between your dog's fur and the outer collar. That means no direct contact 👋 – super practical, especially if your dog is your children’s best buddy.

Thanks to the clasp, the cover collar is super easy to put on and take off – handy when grooming, bathing, or trimming. There's also a little ring for attaching ID tags.

And let’s be honest – doesn’t it look so much better than just that plain gray flea collar? 🤩

No Product Is 100% Foolproof

Unfortunately, no product can guarantee your dog will never be bitten by a tick, so…

Check, Check, Check

Give your dog a nice cuddle session after your walk (our dog Stitch loves this! ;-)). This gives you the perfect chance to check their whole body for ticks.
And don’t forget to check yourself too!
